The aim of the foundation is to "Promote scientific training and research without a view to making a profit for a given individual person or organization. In addition, the foundation supports the care, upbringing and education of children and young people. The foundation may also promote charitable, social, artistic, sporting or other purposes of the public good, but only insofar as this does not contravene its main purpose specified above.”
Holger Crafoord established the Crafoord Foundation in 1980 and made an initial donation of SEK 3 million.
Thanks to further donations by Anna-Greta and Holger Crafoord and to an appreciation in the value of the original donation, by December 31st, 2016 the foundation's capital had risen to SEK 3 135 million (market value). The Foundation is an independent legal entity, led by a board.
Since its inception, the foundation has received more than 27,000 applications for grants and has awarded approximately SEK 1 510 million for different causes.
Applications for grants other than research grants should be made at the beginning of September. Information about who will receive grants is given in December.
In 2016, the Crafoord Foundation distributed approximately SEK 98,1 million. Of that, SEK 80,6 million was donated for scientific research and SEK 17,5 million to other causes.
